AppBurst’s new “Best Event Industry Articles” series aims to share insight related to the event industry from around the internet with a focus on mobile technology. Content sources range from event industry-specific blogs to major technology websites and everything in between. Along with original Apps For Events blog posts, we hope these summaries serve to better educate our readers on mobile technology and the many benefits of event apps.

Volume 1 articles come from Event Manager Blog, Small Business Trends, Corbin Ball Associates, and Entrepreneur:

Attendee Retention Tactics

The insightful post by Event Manager Blog shares 20 tips to retain attendees. While many aren’t directly related to mobile technology, a few stand out as must-have event app features. Rating sessions on a mobile app enables event planners to determine what attendees liked--and more importantly, didn't like--and goes a long way to improving the event. Event improvements naturally lead to increased engagement, attendee retention, and a better overall experience. The article also points out the importance of promoting next year’s event. Announcements at a conference, trade show, or meeting are incredibly easy in a mobile app through social media integration, push notifications, and news feeds.

Last but not least, the article cites a Harvard Business Review study claiming a 5% increase in attendee retention leads to profits rising from 25% to 90%, putting the importance of retaining attendees into perspective. (Read Full Article...)

Think Like A Millennial To Promote Your Event

Millennials are undoubtedly the biggest users of mobile technology and this post by Small Business Trends believes event planners need to think like one, too--at least in promoting a conference or meeting. Much of the article might seem obvious at first glance, but a few key social media points resonate. Author CJ DiRoma says “millennials are trained to think in 140 characters or far, far less… Twitter provides an exceptional platform for creating and generating a social excitement around an event or activity”. The use of #hashtags to increase branding and generate engagement amongst attendees can pay huge dividends. Another point to consider is younger generation’s love of images--easily integrated into every social media channel. The relationship between social media and its integration in a mobile app--whether it be Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or otherwise--is a difference maker. (Read Full Article...)

Meetings Technology Trends for 2015

A long read full of insight into the current and future landscape of meeting technology, Hotelier’s recent post by Corbin Ball emphasizes mobile apps in a handful of his ten highlighted trends. The article rightfully points out that “mobile event apps have become mainstream and will continue to grow”. Simply put, much of mobile app development in the past has focused on replacing existing processes, e.g. paper programs. As event apps and technology grow, however, improvements in areas such as social media and appointment making are becoming more significant, while completely new services like targeting messaging and information exchange--unavailable in the age of paper programs--are now easily obtainable in a mobile app.

Another factor is that “analytics will emerge as one of the most important benefits of mobile event apps.” Enjoying the benefits of analytical data, event planners can better determine attendee engagement and popular sessions or speakers. In-app surveys and live polling are also able to collect data unlike ever before. (Read Full Article...)

Personalize Marketing Events and Boost ROI

Mobile apps can help event hosts and planners in a myriad of ways, from obvious factors such as providing a schedule of sessions and list of attendees to overarching perks like generating engagement and initiating discussion amongst users. Brett Relander in Entrepreneur Magazine goes on to say that “in light of the mobile obsession that has swept the world, offering a branded mobile event app can satisfy your attendees’ quest for instant gratification while providing critical data… With a branded mobile app it is possible to boost pre-event interest, as well as significantly increase the number of opportunities for reaching attendees with targeted branding and messaging.” This targeted branding and messaging--in other words, marketing--can be tracked in a mobile app and offers better insight than traditional word of mouth and surveys.
